Iyanla, Declutter My Life!

Am I the only person who would watch Iyanla Fix My Life & wonder how she could declutter mine? Honey, there was a time I had so much going on that I didn’t know how I was making it through. Being a single parent to a school-aged child who played sports, working 2 full-time jobs in the community, & being in grad school full-time had me bugging! I had all of that going on & still tried to have a social life. That led me to a point where I thought I was having a mental breakdown, & I had to take some stuff off my plate.

Enter: Day Planner! This was back before cell phones had all of the apps that help us stay organized, so I didn’t have the benefit of a mobile calendar or alerts to remind me of things. I’m generally an organized person, so my anxiety was through the roof when I couldn’t keep up with everything on my plate. Writing things down helped a lot, especially with keeping appointments at work & for deadlines. I’d check it every morning to be able to make a plan of action for the day…& it worked!

Now, my planner life is a little different. I add things to my phone’s calendar so I can have alerts for important things, but I also crack my printed planner every night so I can pre-plan the next day & check off what I accomplished that day. It helps me get into a frame of mind the next morning to do whatever comes my way, while it also gives me a pat on the back every night for getting things done. But my planner isn’t just limited to work tasks; I’ve added my family & social life to it.

Now that I’ve added running a business to my busy schedule, using a planner has helped me keep myself in formation. I need the reminders to make sure nothing falls to the wayside. It also allows me to reflect back on things later if I need to. I had to declutter my entire life, so I could make sure my priorities stay in line. My family is my primary focus, so it’s essential for me to make sure everyone gets what they need. Mom & wife life ain’t for the weak! I’ve added dates with the kids & husbae, dinners with my homegirl crew, & even calling my parents daily. Everyone can get a little time from me!

There’s no shame in scheduling time for the people, places, & things that make you happy outside of work. Planning can help you make sure your priorities remain PRIORITIES!
