Balance the Scales of Life
Work-life balance…woooo chile! What a phrase; one that I’ve had a hard time achieving quite frequently over the years. I was raised to take on the world & not crack under the pressure from the weight, but honey, I found myself folding A LOT when I was younger & not privy to the value of self-care. I couldn’t say “no” to anything or anyone & would be overwhelmed trying to figure out how I could juggle all of the balls in my hands. There was no rhyme or reason to how I was going to accomplish things; I just set out on the journey & was an angry little person as a result of the stress. At one time, I was in grad school full-time, working 2 full-time jobs, & a single parent to a young child with a school & football schedule. And taking on all of that led me to a very dark place.
Enter Superwoman aka my planner! I started buying planners when I got tired of the chaos & couldn’t keep up with all that was due. Being able to write things down & refer back to them began to help me accomplish the tasks at hand. As technology advanced, I incorporated my phone’s calendar to set alarms for those tasks as well. It helped me even more because I could use 2 of my senses (sight & sound) to stay on track.
My nightly routine now includes showering, journaling, & scheduling the next day in my planner by referencing my phone’s calendar. I literally write down my important tasks in 30-minute increments & check them off at the end of each day to see how much I accomplished. It not only makes me feel like I’ve really used my time wisely, but also gives me a way to pat myself on the back for a job well done. I honestly don’t go anywhere, including on vacation, without it. It’s become a part of who I am.
Adulthood is a lot of responsibility! If these kids only knew how easy they have it prior to bills, working, kids, & everything else in between! To go back to 17 & only have to go to school, work a few hours at Target, & pay that lil pager bill…Heaven! That era is over though, so I’m going to make the best of this adult life…with my planner keeping me in check.
